Cuatro Caminos
Guatemala
Child
Cuatro Caminos "four roads", where your child lives, is an area located high on the side of a mountain in the state of Quiche, Guatemala. Life in this area is very difficult and very isolated from the outside world. It is a two hour walk to the nearest market town of Zacualpa. Cuatro Caminos is a farming area where corn and black beans, the staple elements in their diet, are the major crops. The Quiche Mayans who inhabit this area trace their ancestral roots to the ancient Mayan civilization. They normally speak a Mayan dialect called Quiche - however, Spanish is becoming more common. Very little money ever changes hands in this area as they live on a barter system.
Hello! This is Esvin Elias Garcia Morente, and I want to tell you a little about my family and me. I am 4 years old, and I was born on June 22, 2021. I am in good health, and I do not attend school yet due to my young age. I enjoy playing soccer and toy cars at home. My favorite color is yellow, and I like cats. I enjoy eating fried chicken. I have two sisters, and one of them is registered at the feeding program too. My mom accompanies us to the program, and we usually walk for 30 minutes to arrive there. We are a humble family, and our frequent needs are groceries and clothes. I would like to ask for your prayers for my maternal grandpa because he is having some health problems. He has visited a doctor, but he has not given her an exact diagnosis.
My father’s name is Pedro Garcia de la Cruz, and he works as a farmer and day laborer in our village; he also goes to pick coffee beans at the coast for three months once a year. My mother’s name is Teresa Morente Ajqui, and she is a housewife; she raises some hens for selling to help with the income. My parents are both in good health. At the moment, we are not attending a church. We live with my maternal grandparents, and we share the house with other relatives. It has one room and a kitchen, and it is made of adobe with a tile roof and dirt floor. We use candles at night, and we use a hose to bring the water from a river to our house. We have hens, a dog, a cat and a sheep at home. This is all for now, and I hope to hear from you soon.
With much love
Esvin Elias Garcia Morente
