My Story

Pasojoc is an area located high on the side of a mountain in the state of Quiché, Guatemala. Life in this area is very difficult and very isolated from the outside world. It is more than a two hour walk to the nearest market town of Zacualpa. Pasojoc is a farming area where corn and black beans, the staple elements in their diet, are the major crops. The Quiché Indians who inhabit this area trace their ancestral roots to the ancient Mayan civilization. They normally speak an Indian dialect called Quiché - however, Spanish is becoming more common. Very little money ever changes hands in this area as they live on a barter system.

Hello! My name is Dominga Garcia Morente. I was born on November 16, 2020, in Zacualpa, Quiche, Guatemala. I am a 4-year-old girl and I am in good health. Because of my young age, I am not attending school yet. So, I like to play with my toy dishes at home. I love the color pink, and my favorite animal is the pig. The meals I love the most are egg tortillas and broth. I have one sister and no brothers. I am very happy to be registered in the feeding program; I get there by walking in 40 minutes; my mother accompanies me.

My father´s name is Francisco Garcia Garcia. He works both as a farmer and day laborer. My mother´s name is Juana Morente Alvarado. She is a housewife; she raises hens, cows and pigs to sell, especially when we have a need. My family is doing well, but I want to ask for your prayers for my grandma, who is diabetic. She has visited a doctor and is taking medicines, but those are expensive. As a family, we do not attend any church. Fortunately, my mother owns the house in which we live and my maternal grandparents live with us. There are two adobe rooms with a tin sheet roof and a dirt floor. The kitchen is separate. There is no running water or electricity, so we get the water from a nearby river. Besides that, we use candles for light at night. Our greatest needs are groceries and medicines for my grandma. Well, this is all for now, and I would like to hear news from you soon. I pray for God to bless you!

Lots of love,

Dominga Garcia Morente
